Barack Obama thanks Shepard Fairey
Shepard Fairey’s Obama poster has gotten a lot of play and now the man himself has written a letter thanking Fairey. It’s pretty ballsy for a presidential candidate to write a letter to a graffiti artist thanking him. Obama (or whoever wrote the letter) evens points out that “Your images have a profound effect on people, whether seen in a gallery or on a stop sign.”

Hi, I'm
That’s one of the most impressive connections I’ve seen about Obama … makes a link for me that takes it outside of politics-as-usual, especially given Shepard’s tagline “manufacturing quality dissent since 1989.” I had honestly gotten to the point at which I thought it would be impossible to bring back progressive ideals. This made me think — at least for a moment — that hope is not lost. I’m still skeptical, but I’m not just impressed by the support this shows from a non-traditional source, but the recognition of its marketing potential from the Obama campaign. For the first time, I’m seeing the layers of strategy from Obama. That may be because I wasn’t paying attention before — but that may be even more significant! At the same time, and just as a cautionary note, it demonstrates just how liberal Obama is — it will be interesting to see if the conservative legions pick up on this :)
