Hunch API

File this under, "I'm not quite sure why this is interesting but I know it is."

A few days ago Hunch, Caterina Fake's new startup that tries to help you make better decisions by showing you data from others trying to decide the same thing, launched an "academic version" of their API. As you can see in their example, this version allows you to search their database of more than 4 million answered questions and not only see the answer, but also see the answers that most highly correlate with the answer you chose. (Users who prefer laptops are most closely correlated with users used a Polaroid camera and users who would cook burgers on the grill are most closely correlated with users that think casual Fridays are awesome.)

Not sure what to do or think about it, but seems kind of awesome. Also kind of reminds me of some of what I've been doing with Brand Tags (and Battle Mode). The idea of making research fun and using the data it spits out to better understand how the world works makes me happy.

Oh, and if you want a Hunch invite, I have a few. Just leave a comment. First left, first served. Unfortunately have none left, you can still leave a comment if you'd like and I'll hook it up when/if my invites get replenished. I'm also pretty sure you can just leave your email on their homepage and you'll get one soon.

First name, first and last, whatever you feel like.

Required, but not displayed (so don't worry about spam).

If you've got one, flaunt it.

You can use some HTML (a's, br's, p's, oh my!) if you'd like, if you don't know what that means, don't worry about it.

REMEMBER ME?

One could look at how different social groups tend to react to a given dilemma, or watch the change in life-decisions over time and across clines, for example.

More relevant to an individual, however, would be the ability to live vicariously through others and perhaps make better decisions as a result. I would like to see if any actual scientifically valid observations about strongly correlated personality preferences. If that is the case, then Hunch will become the most powerful tool in market research and advertising since the focus group - since that's essentially what it is: a focus group with everyone at the table and answering all questions asked.

Re Stephen's comment: my first thought when I read this yesterday was that the greatest thing about the internet might be the extraordinary access to cross-referenced data. In fact, Hunch immediately reminded me of SRI's VALS types(Values and Lifestyles), which segmented the market by personality types and were a cornerstone of market research in my day.

Fascinating, I like the power to the people possibilities. Thinking as an individual who's been segmented into databases in so many places, its very cool to think I could try to pull something beneficial for my super specific requests that old data in new light can also tell us. Or maybe I just need some coffee. I'd love an invite if any remain. randalldottodd at gmail Thanks Noah
